Golfing today has a huge variety of golf equipment available and knowing where to start can be as frustrating as missing the ball. But we are here to provide info that will help your game even before you hit the green.
Types of golf club
- Drivers
Drivers are made of titanium and have big heads. You will use a driver off the tea for your first shot and to drive the ball great distances.
- Woods
Woods were once made from wood but now they are actually made of steel or titanium, the name has remained because of tradition. Woods are used for long distances on the fairway. Woods are used for the longest shots (200-300 yards). 3-woods, 5-woods and 7- woods are the most common and a 1-wood is actually a driver. These numbers represent the loft of the golf club. The more loft a club has, the higher the number and the greater the trajectory of the golf ball will be.
- Irons
Irons are used for intermediate shots to the green. A full set of irons will be 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9-iron.
- Wedges
Wedges are irons with a loft of more than 50 degrees. Wedges are used in close shots. Sand wedges and lob wedges have a very high loft to help with bunker and approaching shots.
- Putters
Putters have a very low loft and a short shaft. They come in a variety of head shapes including mallet, blade, long, belly and short.
- The shaft
The shaft is very important in golf clubs. Graphite shafts are mainly on 3-woods and drivers and a steel shaft is standard with irons. Having a graphite shaft on an iron club is only advisable for high handicapped players. Having this lighter shaft will create more club head speed and the faster the club head speed, the easier to get the ball into the air. You will be putting more spin on the ball with a lighter shaft.
Shafts range from 6.5, which is extra-stiff down to 0.5. The heavier the shaft the stiffer it is going to be.
- Gloves
To get the most out of your game the right glove is important. There are two types of golf glove, "regular" and "cadet". Cadet gloves are a little bit wider in the middle of the glove. It is important to have a glove that fits you perfectly. When you grip the club you don't want your hand sliding around inside the glove because this will change your club face angle and that small difference could really change your shot. The way to avoid this is to have a proper sized glove.
- Golf Balls
There are a ton of different brands of golf balls. The most expensive golf balls have a softer cover and the myth is that a softer cover will result in you not hitting the ball as far. But it is far more important to have feel with a golf ball. The more expensive golf balls will improve your feel and touch around the green. You will not loose much distance and accuracy is far more important when taking longer shots with your drives. So put the distance aside and really focus your shots on touch and feel.
- Golf Bags
Golf equipment needs to be stored in a golf bag and the important thing with a golf bag is finding the right size. If you are someone who likes to walk the golf course a smaller bag is appropriate rather than standard tour bags.
Convenience is also really important. You want to be able to access your clubs, balls, and gloves, even your cell phone easily. Investing in a pouch could really make things easier. A pouch can store your tees, pencils, pens, every small item you will need out on the course in one place.
-Towel
Finally a good golf towel could be the most essential part of your golf equipment. A golf towel will clean your club- face and your grips. When your grips get muddy or dirty it is very important to dry these out. Wetting your towel and wiping the grips up and down and then drying them off will give a great tacky feel to your grip and give you more stability with the club.
